Before you purchase a remote control operator you need to establish what type of garage door you have there are two main types:

  1. Canopy
  2. Retractor

Once you know the type of door you have you can make your choice as to the operator you prefer and if you need a bow arm.

If you do not have a side or rear door to your garage you will need and external emergency release device in case of a power failure.

All operators come with a metre of cable and sealed 240volt three-pin plug attached. You will need to provide power to the operator in the shape of a socket at the appropriate location in the garage. This can be done with an extension lead until this established before a permanent point is provided.

Your garage door should be in good working order.

You will need sufficient headroom from the operator above the garage door this varies with the manufacture, but if at least 2” (50mm) is available this provide for all types.

The roof/ceiling/joists of the garage must be able to hold the weight of the operator. It is best to establish where the joists are to provide a safe and secure fixing.

Up and over (canopy): Main type of domestic door in the UK. Includes the budget cost end of the market, can be in steel, wood or UPVC. Good security, most having multipoint locking. Can be fitted to a wood or steel frame. Can be powered, but requires a bowarm converter, (except for Cardale).

Up and over (retractor): Same as above but with the door sliding back into the garage space is more suitable when the door opens onto a public place or your drive way slopes down to the garage door opening. Can be powered.
